Zonguldak Karaelmas University was established in 1992 and started its educational activities. The name of our university was changed to Bülent Ecevit University in 2012. Our department was established in 2012 and started education at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences located on the Central Campus of our University. As of the 2022-2023 academic year, there are two professors, two associate professors, three  lecturers and four research assistants in our department at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Our department provides education with an approach that focuses on research and is based on fieldwork. It is based on the academic experience of Zonguldak, which has hosted extremely important sociological and anthropological studies on issues such as labor movements, industrialization, urbanization, environment and multiculturalism. In addition, it has a deep and broad perspective that tries to understand the local, national and international sociological issues, questions and problems brought about by today's world with a holistic view.
